Kerwin Whitney

Photographer Kerwin Whitney is a life long resident of Chester, Maine. More than 70 of his images have won awards in wildlife and outdoor photography contests. His photos have appeared in numerous local, national and international publications including: The Maine Sportsman, Northeast Big Buck News, Wooden Canoe and General Aviation News.

Kerwin worked as an electrician at a paper mill in Lincoln, Maine from 1979 – 2004. After the closure of the mill in 2004 he pursued his desire to teach secondary mathematics. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education at the University of Maine in Orono in 2006 and is currently enjoying his 15th year of teaching at Penobscot Valley High School in Howland, Maine.

Kerwin’s interest in photography began with a Canon AE 1 Program camera,
a 1986 gift from his wife Elizabeth. His passion for outdoor photography grew during the summers of 2006 – 2008 while working as a Park Ranger at Baxter State Park in northern Maine. Kerwin currently uses a digital Canon 7D Mark II camera. In this era of image processing, he considers himself a Photoshop minimalist. Kerwin considers Mother Nature to be the ultimate artist. His goal is to capture a scene with his camera rather than create one with his computer.

During his free time Kerwin can often be found in pursuit of his next photograph. Some of his favorite outings are coastal drives to lighthouses, mountain biking on the carriage trails of Acadia National Park, kayaking with loons at sunrise, hiking to a backcountry pond to look for moose and snowshoeing along the West Branch of the Penobscot River. Kerwin’s greeting cards, matted and framed photos and large canvas images can be found in art galleries and gift shops throughout Maine.
